Authorities in Texas have identified the gunman who killed eight people, including children, at a Dallas mall. The attacker has been identified as Mauricio Garcia, 33 years old.

Garcia, a resident of Dallas, was killed by a police officer who came to the scene.

US President Joe Biden described the attack as "the latest act of gun violence that has devastated our nation".

American media quoted investigators as saying that Garcia may have ties to the far right, as suggested by the logos he had placed on his clothes.

He used AR-15-style rifles and had a logo that read RWDS, short for "Right Wing Death Squad," which is believed to be a neo-Nazi group.

According to witnesses, the armed attacker got out of his car in the parking lot of the shopping center and started shooting at the citizens.

Six people died at the scene, while two others died in the hospital. At least three more people are still in critical condition.

Garcia also had a handgun with him, while other weapons were also discovered in his car.

President Biden has confirmed that there are children among those killed, adding that "many families have empty chairs at their tables", as he again called on members of the Republican Party to support stricter gun controls.

Garcia reportedly worked as a security guard and had no criminal record.

Following the incident on Sunday, President Biden ordered American flags to be flown at half-staff in all federal buildings.

According to the data, the US has the highest number of gun deaths of any other developed country. In 2021, 49,000 people had died from firearms, while a year earlier this number had been 45,000.
