The United States will provide Ukraine with a new $1.2 billion military aid package to further strengthen its air defenses as Russia continues to strike Ukraine with drones and missiles, US officials said on Monday.

The new aid package is expected to be announced on Tuesday and the money will be provided by the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. Unlike US equipment, weapons and ammunition that are more often sent to Ukraine from Pentagon stockpiles so they can be shipped quickly, this money will be spent over the coming months or even years to meet Ukraine's future military needs. .

The new funds will finance HAWK air defense systems, munitions for air defense systems and air defense drones. According to officials, these funds will also be used to purchase artillery, missiles, satellite imaging equipment, equipment maintenance and spare parts for a variety of defense systems. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the aid package has not yet been officially announced.

Including this package, the United States has provided Ukraine with about $37 billion in military aid since Russia's attack on Kiev began in February 2022.

The decision on the new military aid comes as Ukraine prepares to launch a spring offensive against Russian forces and continues to struggle with air defense.

Ukraine's air defenses shot down 35 Iranian-made drones over Kiev in the latest overnight attack by Russia, officials said Monday. Debris from a drone hit an apartment building in Kiev's western Svyatoshynsky district, while other debris hit a parked car nearby, setting it on fire, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a post on the Telegram platform. .

Russia bombed 127 targets in northern, southern and eastern parts of Ukraine, killing three civilians, Ukraine's defense ministry said.

Facing economic sanctions and restrictions on its supply chains due to its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has often used Iran's Shahed drones to bolster its arsenal of offensive weapons. The new US military aid package for Ukraine also includes weapons and more immediate military support, such as systems to shoot down drones./ Voa
