Vice President Kamala Harris held her first campaign rally on Tuesday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of the swing states for the presidential election. She criticized the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump, saying that the November 5 vote is a "choice between freedom or chaos".
"Do we want to live in the land of freedom, compassion and the rule of law or in the land of chaos, fear and hatred," she asked.
Ms. Harris held the rally after securing the support of enough Democratic delegates to be nominated as the Democratic Party's nominee for president.
The meeting was the first since Sunday, when she launched her campaign for the November race, after President Biden threw his support behind her. According to the Associated Press news agency, Vice President Kamala Harris has raised more than $100 million as of Sunday afternoon.
Top Democratic leaders in Congress endorse Kamala Harris
The two top Democratic leaders in Congress have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the presidential nominee.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries ended questions over whether they would join Democrats backing Ms. Harris to secure the party's nomination for the Nov. 5 election.
Kamala Harris secures the support of Democratic delegates to be nominated for president
Vice President Kamala Harris secured the support of enough Democratic delegates to be named the Democratic Party's presidential nominee against Republican rival Donald Trump.
According to reports, Ms. Harris now has the support of the 1,976 delegates she needs to win in the first round of voting within her own party, consolidating her position as the most likely Democratic candidate to replace President Biden.
In her first speech as the presumptive nominee, Ms. Harris, a former prosecutor, promised to unite the party and the country and ensure a Democratic victory, drawing a stark contrast between herself and Mr. Trump.
With only 105 days until the US presidential elections and the Democratic Party is racing against time, which also explains this rapid unification around candidate Kamala Harris as the party's attempt to overcome the dramatic developments that led to the withdrawal of President Biden, but also the need for Democratic voters to mobilize.
Ms. Harris's campaign raised $81 million in 24 hours, setting a new record. Democratic delegations continued to coordinate, and large numbers of volunteers signed up to help her campaign. Analysts see this as a sign of enthusiasm for her candidacy.
Democratic Party delegates are expected to hold a virtual vote before the party's convention on August 19, so that the party's candidate for president is determined beforehand and the convention is a unity convention.
Ms. Harris, meanwhile, is wasting no time. She held her first election rally in Wisconsin, one of the disputed states. Yesterday she met with the electoral team that until yesterday bore the name Biden-Harris, and in her first speech she revealed the main issues on which she will build the campaign against Mr. Trump, placing a special emphasis on the difference between her, as former prosecutor and the Republican candidate, found guilty of criminal offenses.
"In the days and weeks ahead, together with you, I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party, unite our nation, and win this election. As you know, before I was elected Vice President, before I was elected United States Senator, I was elected Attorney General of California, and before that I worked as a prosecutor. In these tasks, I hit perpetrators of all crimes. Abusers of women. Fraudsters who stole from consumers and broke the rules to benefit themselves. So believe me when I tell you that I know guys like Donald Trump," she declared.
Ms. Harris made the comments from the Democratic Party's campaign headquarters in Dellauer, where she also spoke about reproductive rights, one of the key issues in this year's election.
"In this campaign, I will proudly compare my past with his past. This team will help elect a majority of US Congressional lawmakers in November who agree that the government should not tell women what to do with their bodies. "After Congress passes the law to restore reproductive freedoms, as President of the United States I will sign the law," Ms. Harris said.
She also said that in this presidential election, American voters are faced with a dilemma of great weight.
"In these elections, each of us faces a question. What country do we want to live in? In a free state, with compassion and the rule of law, or in a chaotic state, where fear and hatred prevail?", she added.
If she is nominated as the Democratic nominee for president and wins against Republican challenger Trump, she would become the first woman president of the United States.
But according to University of Virginia history professor Barbara Perry, challenges await Ms. Harris on this journey.
"In this country, she will face more gender challenges than racial challenges... We have only had male presidents, so we only have the model of a man as president. I hope that the United States can overcome this phenomenon and expand the pool of people who are suitable candidates and who can win the presidential election. It's a very important position, to exclude half the population,” says Professor Perry.
Even as Vice President, but also as a candidate for this post in 2020, Ms. Harris was the object of attacks by Republicans as incompetent. Now that she is doing better in the polls against Mr. Trump than President Biden, according to analysts, she is expected to continue to be targeted by Republicans.
She has been accused of being elevated to positions of favor and based on gender and racial quotas rather than merit -- a not uncommon criticism of women holding high positions of power as well as a broader trend that aims to attack successful women on gender grounds.
Republican Vice Presidential nominee JD Vance said Ms. Harris "will be a million times worse" than President Biden, who he called the worst president in the history of the United States.
Attacks on her recently have focused on portraying Ms. Harris as responsible for the situation on the border with Mexico and illegal immigration, which is also one of the main issues in Mr. Trump's campaign./ Voa
