British police: Violence against women a national emergency

Violence against women and girls has reached "epidemic levels" and police are treating it as a threat of the same proportions as terrorism, British police chiefs said on Tuesday.

Over 1 million violent crimes against women and girls were recorded by British police during 2022-2023. These are as much as a fifth of all recorded crimes, says a new report circulated by the National Council of Police Chiefs and the College of Policing.

One in six murders during this period is related to domestic violence. At least one in every 12 women are victims of crimes such as sexual violence, rape, stalking, harassment or online abuse, the report estimates, while the true number is thought to be much higher due to crimes not being reported.

"Violence against women and girls is a national emergency," Deputy Chief Constable Maggie Blyth said in a statement. "We must take measures as a society to change things and we can no longer accept violence against women and girls as inevitable."

Ms Blyth added that the figures were "shocking" and that the size and complexity of cases were increasing every year. Such crimes have increased by 37% from 2018 to 2022.

Last year, Britain's government classified violence against women and girls as a national risk to public safety, and police forces were instructed to prioritize responding to such cases, just as they do to terrorism and organized crime.

The report says thousands of police officers have attended new training programs to investigate rape and other sexual offenses over the past year.

But Ms Blyth said this was not enough and called for more government support for the criminal justice system which is "overburdened and not delivering the right results for victims"./ Voa
