Sharks off the coast of Brazil have tested positive for cocaine, scientists say, BBC reports.

Marine biologists tested 13 Brazilian sharks taken off the coast near Rio de Janeiro and found that they tested for high levels of cocaine in their muscles and liver. Concentrations were up to 100 times higher than previously reported for other aquatic creatures.

The research, conducted by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, is the first to reveal the presence of cocaine in sharks.

Experts believe that cocaine is entering the waters through illegal laboratories where the drug is produced or through the feces of drug users.

Packages of cocaine lost or thrown overboard by traffickers could also be a source, although this is less likely, the researchers say.

Sara Novais, a marine eco-toxicologist at the Polytechnic University of Leiria's Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences, told Science magazine that the findings are "very important and potentially worrying".

Further research is needed to prove whether cocaine is changing the behavior of sharks.
