Germany's investigative journalism association, Netzwerk Recherche (NR), has expelled influential journalist and author Hubert Seipel after it emerged that he received money from Moscow to write books in favor of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A joint investigation, led by German broadcaster ZDF, revealed in November 2023 that Seipel, who interviewed Putin and wrote two books about him, received 600,000 euros from Kremlin-linked oligarch Alexei Mordashov.

"Seipel has violated the basic rules of independent journalism with his behavior and has caused great damage to the reputation of our profession," the chairman of the Netzwerk Recherche network, Daniel Drepper, told ZDF.

Earlier, the German journalist, Seipel, confirmed for "ZDF" that he received "financial support through Mordashov", but said that "this did not affect the content of his books in any way".

Seipel has said that he met Putin "almost 100 times" and that he was one of the few Western journalists who had direct contact with the Russian leader.

His book entitled "Putin's Power: Why Europe Needs Russia?" was published in 2021, after a biography published in 2015 with the title "Putin: Inside Power"./ REL
