Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump held his first campaign rally with the newly nominated vice-presidential candidate in Michigan on Saturday. The event took place exactly one week after the former president survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania.

"It was exactly one week ago, even at the same hour and minute... I stand before you today only thanks to the almighty God. I shouldn't be here right now. Something very special happened," former President Trump told supporters.

Together with the former president, the senator from Ohio JD Vance was also in the activity. It was their first joint event since officially taking the nomination to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Michigan is one of the key states expected to determine the outcome of the presidential election. Former President Trump took the opportunity to declare that he will win regardless of who the Democratic candidate will be.

"Who is your favorite candidate? Who would you like?... Who would you most like to face? Who do you think is the best candidate? We will start with Kamala Harris and continue," said former President Trump.

President Joe Biden has vowed to continue running, and so have his campaign officials, although voices among elected Democrats calling for his withdrawal from the race are growing, reaching 36 over the weekend.

There was even a protest in front of the White House over the weekend. Democratic activists and voters rallied under the slogan "Pass the Baton," calling on President Biden to withdraw from running for a second term.

While Democrats are considering such a possibility, the situation in the Democratic Party will depend a lot on whether it will be Vice President Kamala Harris who will take the baton, or whether a new process for selecting candidates will have to be quickly organized.

For her part, Vice President Harris attended a campaign event in Massachusetts on Saturday in support of President Biden's re-election. "We will win this election," declared Vice President Harris.

The 81-year-old president continues to be in isolation at his home in Dellauer due to the infection from COVID-19, while the media announce that he is weighing alternatives that could determine the direction of the country and his Democratic Party./ Voa
