New details have emerged of Israeli airstrikes targeting Houthi rebels in Yemen, a day after the Iran-backed group carried out a deadly attack in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

The Israeli attacks were aimed at pressuring the Houthis to stop supporting the Palestinians in Gaza, the BBC reports . 

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said his country intended to send a message to the Houthi movement. 

"The fire that is currently burning in Hodeidah is seen throughout the Middle East and the importance is clear," he said.

Houthi-affiliated news media reported that 3 people were killed and more than 80 wounded in Saturday's attacks, in what official Mohammed Abdulsalam said was a "brutal aggression by Israel against Yemen".

It is the first time Israel has responded directly to what it says have been hundreds of Yemeni drone and missile strikes directed at its territory in recent months.

The Houthi-led government in Sanaa said Israel struck oil storage facilities near the coast as well as a nearby power plant. /CNA
