Erdogan opposes the idea of ??a single state of Cyprus

Turkey continues to oppose the creation of a united Cypriot Federation, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

He made these statements within the events organized to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion.

"We believe that the solution with a single federation is not possible in Cyprus", the Turkish leader said on Saturday, as he visited the northern area controlled by Turkish forces on this divided island.

In 1974, the Greek Cypriot nationalists and the then dictatorial system in Athens wanted to unite Cyprus with Greece, which resulted in a military coup on the island.

To prevent a union with Greece, Turkey has intervened militarily. Since then, the island has been divided.

Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis has rejected calls by his Turkish Cypriot counterpart, Ersin Tatar, for a two-state solution.

"We will not discuss the two-state solution, under any circumstances," Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said earlier in the week.

The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, called on Saturday for a united Cyprus.

The two-state solution is also opposed by the European Union and the United Nations.

The goal of the UN has always been for a kind of federation with a central government./ REL
