Soldiers in Bangladesh are patrolling the streets of the capital Dhaka on Saturday under a curfew aimed at stopping deadly student-led protests against quotas for government jobs.

At least 105 people have been killed in these protests this week.

The measure blocking internet and messaging services has been in effect since Thursday, isolating Bangladesh from the rest of the world as police cracked down on protests that continued despite a ban on public gatherings.

Overseas phone calls could not be made, as foreign missions in Bangladesh failed to update the data on their platforms. In addition to the dead, thousands of people have been injured in the clashes, according to data from Bangladeshi hospitals.

For five days in a row, police have fired tear gas and stun grenades to intimidate protesters as they clashed with security personnel.

The protests - the biggest since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was re-elected to a fourth term this year - have been fueled by high unemployment among young people, who make up about a fifth of the South Asian nation of 170 million. residents.

Due to the worsening of the situation, Hasina's Government has ordered a curfew and engaged the army. National anger has erupted over controversial quotas for government jobs, including 30 percent for families of those who fought to gain independence from Pakistan.

Hasina's government overturned the quota system in 2018, but a court reinstated it last month. The state has appealed the decision and the Supreme Court will make the final decision on August 7.

Hasina has canceled trips to Spain and Brazil, due to the protests.

International human rights groups have criticized the decision to block the Internet. The European Union has said that it is deeply concerned about the violence and loss of life./ REL
