Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on July 19 that Ursula von der Leyen is "an employee" and not an opponent.

Von der Leyen, who on July 18 was re-elected for a term as president of the European Commission, has been a constant critic of Orban's close relations with Moscow, but also of the stagnation in democracy in Hungary.

Orban, whose country took over the EU presidency on July 1, has repeatedly opposed European support for Ukraine and sanctions imposed against Moscow.

Earlier this month, he carried out a "peace mission", visiting Moscow and Beijing, visits that were criticized by the president of the EC, but also by other leaders of the European bloc. He then also met with the former American president, Donald Trump, who is the candidate of the Republican Party for the November presidential elections.

"Von der Leyen is not our political opponent, she is our employee and yours," Orban said during an interview with Hungarian state radio on July 19.

"Her duty is to implement the line defined by the prime ministers. After she receives her salary from the member states, she is in a relationship of dependence," said Orban.

Orban's statements come a day after von der Leyen, during her speech in the European Parliament before the re-election vote, criticized the visits made by Orban.

Orban also called on EU leaders to be more effective in holding von der Leyen "accountable", adding that her performance has been "very poor".

Under the leadership of Orbán's Fidesz party – which has been in power in Hungary since 2010 – Hungary has been accused of weakening the rule of law, violating human rights and increasing corruption cases. EU funds, worth billions of euros, dedicated to Hungary have been blocked by the EU due to these concerns./ REL
