Yemen's Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for what appears to have been a drone strike in central Tel Aviv in the early hours of Friday, killing one man and wounding several others, the Israeli military said.

The explosion, which did not trigger air defense alarms, came hours after the Israeli military confirmed it had killed a senior Hezbollah militia commander in southern Lebanon.

Both Hezbollah and the Houthi rebels are supported by Iran.

"An initial investigation indicates that the explosion in Tel Aviv was caused by the fall of an aerial target and no sirens were activated. The incident is under detailed investigation," the army said in a statement.

The attack in Tel Aviv is expected to raise concerns about the possibility of the war spreading to Gaza, as the Houthis and other Iranian networks are with Hamas, the Palestinian group that rules Gaza.

Hamas has been declared a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union.

The army has said it has not increased Israeli air defenses over Tel Aviv, although the mayor of the city - Israel's economic center - has raised the alert to the highest level.

A spokesman for Yemen's Houthis has said that the group has attacked Tel Aviv with a drone and will continue to target Israel, as a sign of solidarity with the Palestinians, due to the war in Gaza. Israeli emergency services have said that the body of a 50-year-old man was found dead in an apartment near the site of the explosion.

Israel has been exchanging missiles with Hezbollah in Lebanon on an almost daily basis since the start of the war in Gaza.

The war, which began on October 7 last year, was instigated by Hamas, after the group's militants carried out attacks in southern Israel, killing more than 1,200 Israelis and taking about 240 hostages.

About 116 hostages are believed to be still in Gaza, including 42 that the Israeli military believes have been killed.

Israel then launched a campaign in Gaza to destroy Hamas.

As a result of Israel's ground and air offensive in that region, more than 38,000 Palestinians have been killed, the Palestinian health authorities report./ Rel
