Greece's culture ministry ordered the closure of the Acropolis, the ancient complex in Athens, for several hours in the middle of the day on Wednesday, as authorities warned of extreme weather for much of the country. The decision comes as southern Europe has been hit by a heatwave that has sent temperatures soaring.

Meteorologists warned that high temperatures will continue for several more days, at least until Sunday, while today and tomorrow temperatures are expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius.

The Acropolis is a popular tourist spot in the Greek capital. Meanwhile, officials called on citizens to stay indoors with air conditioning, avoid exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day, and drink water regularly.

Tourists hoping to visit the Parthenon temple atop the Acropolis went in the morning to avoid the heat as the Red Cross handed out bottles of water and leaflets with information to people waiting in line.

"I came 10 minutes ago, but it's very hot. 10 minutes was enough for me to feel it," says Jordan Lilley, a tourist from Britain.

The heat and droughts have caused fires in several areas, including a powerful fire in the forests of Corinth, in the south of Greece./ VOA
