Germany plans to halve military aid to Ukraine

Germany is planning to halve military aid to Ukraine next year, from about 8 billion euros to about 4 billion euros, according to a draft budget approved by the government.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner said Ukraine's funding was secure for the foreseeable future because of a scheme by the G7 group of rich countries to collect $50 billion from interest on frozen Russian assets.

Germany is the second largest military donor to Ukraine, after the USA. In 2024, Berlin's budget for Kyiv is set at around 7.5 billion euros.

The planned aid cuts come amid fears in Ukraine and among its European allies that US funding could be cut or even stopped if Donald Trump wins the presidency in November.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The draft budget was approved by the German government on Wednesday.

Although military aid to Ukraine is expected to be reduced, the defense budget for 2025 will increase by 1.3 billion euros to 53.25 billion euros.

This is still less than the €6 billion that Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had asked for.

Overall, Germany is planning to meet the target of 2% of GDP defense spending as required by the NATO alliance.

The defense budget still needs to be approved by lawmakers./ CNA
