Kurti: The opening of the main bridge over the Iber – for the benefit of

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said on Thursday that the opening of the main bridge over the Ibër River, which also marks the dividing line between the two municipalities of this city, would be a fair action, respecting the freedom of movement.

He made these comments at a press conference a day after the meeting with the ambassadors of the main western countries in Kosovo, in which the possibility of restoring the freedom of movement of cars across this bridge, which is currently used only for pedestrian movement, was discussed, while guarded by police forces and those of the NATO peacekeeping mission.

"The opening of the main bridge over the Ibër river, which we aim for, is not against anyone, but it is for citizens, for goods and for capital. It helps both people on both sides of the Ibri regardless of ethnicity, as well as trade, economy and cooperation," he said.

In April of last year, the assembly of the municipality of North Mitrovica, where the representatives of the Albanian community are in the majority after the departure of the Serbian representatives from the institutions of Kosovo, made a decision to open this bridge, although as it was said, the final decision belongs to the central institutions .

Serbian political parties in the north oppose the opening of the bridge.

The European Union says that any action that affects the two communities should be discussed in the framework of the talks in Brussels, while emphasizing that the opening of the bridge was part of two agreements in the framework of the dialogue facilitated by the European Union from 2015 and 2016. The bloc says that "unilateral and uncoordinated steps shift attention from the main priority for both sides, which is the implementation of the agreement on the normalization of relations", which the parties agreed on last year in Brussels and Ohrid.

However, the last two meetings in Brussels between the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia, as well as the chief negotiators of both sides, aimed at unblocking the implementation of the agreement, ended without any results.

Today is the deadline for the parties to send to the mediators of the European Union their comments about the way to implement the agreement on the normalization of relations, based on which the bloc is expected to draft a new proposal on this process.

Prime Minister Kurti said that the Kosovo team is still working on the preparation of proposals...

"In order to respond to Burksel in an adequate and deserved manner and we will inform you about this during today or tomorrow morning at the latest", he said.

Although it has not been signed, the European Union considers the Ohrid agreement legally binding and in some cases has emphasized that the progress in its implementation is closely related to the progress of both parties in the integration processes./ VOA
