Infected with COVID-19, President Joe Biden is facing physical and political isolation at a critical moment in his campaign for a second presidential term. As VOA correspondent Patsy Widakuswara reports, more Democrats are asking him to withdraw from the race.

Republicans pledged unity and support for their White House nominee, former President Donald Trump, as they wrapped up the national convention in Milwaukee.

For President Biden, it's a lonelier scene. He is isolated in his house in Dalauer after being infected with COVID-19. Meanwhile, senior Democratic lawmakers have called on Mr. Biden to withdraw from the race. Analysts say the president's chances are bleak.

"Democrats can't even decide if Biden is in trouble or not. And if so, remove him from the race and in what way. This is a fundamental issue. On the other hand, the Republicans have united and made a good assembly. "Donald Trump, in part because of his assassination, probably has more public support than he's had before," says analyst Larry Sabato with the University of Virginia.

Privately, it is said that the president is listening to concerns, while publicly he is resisting calls to withdraw from the race.

"I have shown that I know how to do things for the country, despite being told that we could not do them. But we still have work to do, and I'm reluctant to back down," President Biden said during an interview on the BET television channel.

65% of Democrats say Mr. Biden should drop out of the race, according to an AP-NORC poll.

"It is the height of stupidity and ignorance to pretend to know who will win and who will lose based on constantly changing polls. And forcing candidates to withdraw, just because you think they can't win," says professor Alan Lichtman with American University.

Presidential historian Alan Lichtman's Keys to the White House system has accurately predicted all but one election outcome since 1984. He says Democrats should stick with Mr. Biden.

Professor Litchman's system does not take surveys into account. 70% of Americans say they are not sure Mr. Biden has the mental capacity to be president, while 51% think the same about Mr. Trump.

If Mr. Biden agrees to step down, one possible scenario would be for him to endorse another candidate. Vice President Kamala Harris would be a logical choice, at least financially, because as part of the Biden-Harris duo, she would inherit the funds collected for the presidential campaign./ VOA
