The Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) in Kosovo announced on Sunday that it has increased the level of control for shipments of poultry products from Brazil, due to the outbreak of Newcastle disease. This disease affects domestic poultry and is highly contagious.

AUV has said that it has received a warning from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in Brazil for the temporary suspension of certification for exports of poultry meat and its products.

According to a post on Facebook, the Agency has said that, in cooperation with the security bodies and the Kosovo Customs, it will be ensured to carry out a detailed control of each load.

In the list of products to be checked are fresh, chilled or frozen poultry meat. The agency has said that Newcastle disease is not a public health concern.

According to the Kosovo Customs, the most imported food products are meat and its products, fish and its products, honey, eggs and dairy products.

The report of the European Commission for Kosovo for 2023, estimates that Kosovo is 'somewhat' prepared for food security.

According to this report, Kosovo has advanced in the field of food control as well as in creating a legal basis, but resources continue to remain scarce.

Lamir Thaçi, information officer at AUV, told Radio Evropa e Lire weeks ago that the small number of inspectors remains a challenge for this institution and that this also affects the number of inspections.

"Currently, within the AUV, there are 74 inspectors, including internal and border inspectors. The number of inspectors in relation to the number of entities that deal with food products is very small. The needs are, at least, for 50 inspectors", he said./ Rel
