Removal of visas for Kosovo Serbs / Kurti, criticism of the EU
Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, described as "unfair and harmful" the decision of the Council of the European Union to remove the visa regime from citizens of Kosovo who possess Serbian passports, issued by the Coordinating Directorate of Serbia.

This decision, according to him, is "also discouraging for the integration of Kosovo Serbs".

But, added Kurti, "we do not have great opportunities to influence the decisions of Brussels".

Kurti made these comments to journalists during the inauguration of several renovated spaces in the Cardiac Surgery Clinic at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo.

The Foreign Ministers of the European Union took the aforementioned decision on July 22.

The decision is expected to enter into force on the 20th day after publication in the Official Gazette of the EU.

Kosovo Serbs, who hold passports issued by the Coordinating Directorate of Serbia, are currently the only citizens of the Western Balkans who need visas to travel to the free movement area, Schengen.

The European Commission proposed the lifting of visas for them as early as November of last year.

Kosovo does not recognize the passports of the Coordinating Directorate of Serbia, which operates within the Serbian Ministry of the Interior in Belgrade, and their holders cannot fly with them from Pristina Airport.

Authorities in Kosovo encourage Serbian citizens to obtain Kosovo passports.

Citizens with biometric passports of Kosovo enjoy the liberalization of visas from January 1 of this year./ REL
