In a fight to 'keep' office/ French Prime Minister hopes to hold

The French prime minister is fighting to keep his job in a difficult budget situation with the opposition.

Francois Bayrou shocked France this week by saying he would seek a confidence vote in a divided parliament on September 8 as he struggles to secure enough support for his plan to cut spending.

The centrist politician is expected to give a television interview on Sunday evening in a new attempt to figure out a future for himself and his minority government, even if polls show public opinion is against him.

From Monday, Bayrou, 74, hopes to hold negotiations with the opposition on the condition that the parties commit to austerity measures to reduce France's debt.

While Macron has backed Bayrou, opposition parties from the far right to the far left say they will not support Bayrou's austerity budget.

Bayrou said he wanted to save about 44 billion euros with measures that include reducing the number of official holidays and freezing spending growth.

The measures have proven deeply unpopular, with unions calling for protests in September. /CNA
