In 2024, citizens of Kosovo will travel visa-free to Switzerland

From January 1, 2024, citizens of Kosovo will be able to enter Switzerland for short-term stays without visas, the Federal Council of Switzerland has decided.

The decision to exempt Kosovar citizens from visa requirements was made on May 17, with the approval of the Federal Council to amend the Ordinance on entry and issuance of visas, " SchengenVisaInfo.com" reports.

The European Parliament and the Council of the EU approved the Schengen regulation for Kosovo on April 19, indicating that Kosovo has met the requirements for visa waivers that prove security, border controls and migration management.

This means that Kosovar citizens are exempt from visa requirements to enter the Schengen area for short stays of 90 days every 180 days.

Since Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, Kosovar citizens are allowed to enter this country, provided they present a biometric passport.

"A visa is still required to be employed in Switzerland. Kosovar citizens are allowed to be employed only on the condition that they have good professional qualifications and that no equivalent workers can be found in the Swiss labor market or in the EU/EFTA countries," the Federal Council's communiqué clarifies.

It is estimated that around 200,000 Kosovars currently live in Switzerland, representing the fifth largest group of foreigners in the country.

In general, there has always been a large diaspora of Kosovars in Switzerland, as almost 30,000 people applied for asylum in Switzerland in 1999 during the Serbian war in Kosovo.
