The Greek Prime Minister is sued for the train accident

A group representing the 57 victims of the collision of two trains in Greece in February has filed criminal charges against the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and several other ministers and officials.

The lawsuit by Greek officials was made public before the country holds national elections this Sunday.

"The lawsuit targets the prime minister, ministers and former ministers" as well as other officials, said the group's representative, Christos Konstantinidis, whose wife died during the train tragedy.

A passenger train collided with a freight train on February 28 after the two trains were mistakenly allowed to travel on the same track.

Thirty of the 57 people who died were under the age of 30, most of them students.

The tragedy sparked protests attended by tens of thousands of people who expressed their dissatisfaction with the government, which in the last eight years has been led by the conservative Mitsotakis or his main rival, the leftist Alexis Tsipras.

The former head of the railway network company OSE, who was forced to resign after the accident, is now being prosecuted.

Three more railway officials are also facing justice due to the train collision.

The government faced criticism after initially trying to pin the blame on railway officials.

Rail unions have for years warned of safety risks, arguing that the rail network is understaffed and underinvested for a decade.

Mitsotakis later apologized and vowed to improve the safety situation on the railways in cooperation with European Union experts and the French train operator, SNCF.

According to the strike laws, only the Parliament can investigate the prime minister and ministers./REL
