After the floods, the "Formula 1" race in Italy is cancelled

Nine people have died and several others are missing after torrential rains flooded Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, officials said.

About 10,000 people have been evacuated, and some had to be rescued from rooftops by helicopter. Authorities have said 14 rivers have burst their banks, flooding 23 towns.

The mayor of Ravenna, Michele de Pascale, has said that the city is now "alienated". This weekend's scheduled race, the Formula 1 Grand Prix, in Emilia-Romagna, has been cancelled.

In discussions on Wednesday, between local authorities and race organizers in Imola, it was decided that the event could not be held.

An even greater amount of rain is expected to fall in the following days.

"This may have been the heaviest night in the history of Romania", said Pascale, for the Italian public broadcaster, RAI.

The mayor of the nearby town, Forli, Luca Zattini, has said that the town is "on its knees, destroyed and in pain".

The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, organized a meeting with the crisis team and then thanked the rescue teams, who risked their lives to help the victims./ Rel
