The funeral of French cinema icon Brigitte Bardot will take place next week in her hometown of Saint-Tropez, her foundation said Monday, as France struggles to find a way to pay tribute to a cultural legend who in later years espoused far-right views.
The mayor's office previously said the movie star turned animal rights activist, who died Sunday at the age of 91, will be buried in the city's seaside cemetery.
The Brigitte Bardot Foundation said the funeral at the Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church on January 7 will be broadcast on screens across the city, followed by a "private" burial, but did not confirm where she would be buried in Saint-Tropez.
Bardot said in 2018 that she wanted to be buried in her own garden, to avoid a "crowd of idiots" trampling the graves of her parents and grandparents.
Bardot rose to fame in her early twenties in the 1956 film "And God Created Woman" and went on to appear in around 50 films, but turned her back on cinema in 1973 to engage in the fight for animal welfare. /CNA
