Lumezi rejects proposal for Deputy Chief State Prosecutor

Former Chief State Prosecutor of Kosovo, Aleksandër Lumezi, has rejected a proposal to become Deputy Chief State Prosecutor, due to, as he said, other professional commitments.

The Kosovo Prosecutorial Council (KPK) said on Monday that it was notified by Lumezi through a letter that he does not want this position, following the proposal of the Acting Chief State Prosecutor, Agron Qalaj.

His refusal was announced just hours before a meeting of the Prosecutorial Council, where a vote on his appointment was expected.

“After careful consideration of the responsibilities and commitments that this position requires, I have concluded that at this time I will not be able to accept this position, due to my professional commitments as a prosecutor in the Office of the Chief State Prosecutor and in the Commission for the Evaluation of the Performance of Prosecutors of all levels,” Lumezit’s letter states.

Lumezi was Chief State Prosecutor from 2015 to 2022, when his mandate ended.

The proposal to appoint Lumez to this position comes at a time when controversy and changes occurred in the Prosecutorial Council.

Last week, Qalaj was appointed acting Chief State Prosecutor, after Besim Kelmendi resigned.

Kelmendi's resignation came a few days after the Supreme Court annulled the Prosecutorial Council's decision to dismiss him, calling it unlawful.

Kosovo has been without a Chief State Prosecutor since Lumezi's mandate ended in 2022.

President Vjosa Osmani did not appoint Blerim Isufaj to this position when the Prosecutorial Council proposed him years ago, on the grounds that several legal violations were found in the selection process.

The international factor criticized the manner in which Isufaj was selected by the KPK, and on occasion has demanded that the process return to ground zero./REL
