Montana becomes the first US state to outlaw the use of the TikTok app

Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte on Wednesday signed legislation banning the use of the Chinese-owned app TikTok in his state, becoming the first US state to ban the popular social media app.

Under yesterday's act, it would be illegal for Google and Apple to offer the Tik Tok app to users who live in Montana. The ban comes into effect on January 1, 2024, and in case of violation, both Tik Tok and the companies Google and Apple can face fines of up to 10 thousand dollars per day.

The TikTok app is used by more than 150 million Americans, but a growing number of lawmakers and state officials are calling for its ban across the United States amid concerns about the Chinese government's potential influence over the platform.

TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, said in a statement that the law violates the US Constitution's First Amendment right to freedom of expression, adding that the platform "will protect the rights of its users at home and abroad." Montana.
