Cigarette smuggling through balloons/ 5 people arrested in Poland

Polish border guards have cracked down on the activities of an organized group involved in smuggling cigarettes from Belarus using balloons.

Five people were arrested, including two Polish citizens, two Ukrainian citizens and a Belarusian citizen.

According to the Border Guard, investigators believe that the citizens organized cigarette smuggling using hot air balloons and between September 2025 and February 2026, they managed to transport at least 48,000 packs of cigarettes.

The value of the contraband is estimated at 1 million zlotys, or about $230,000.

Searches were carried out in Siedlce and surrounding areas, during which cigarettes and GPS devices were seized.

The arrested are aged between 20 and 35 and have been remanded in custody by a court for three months. /CNA
