Police said Tuesday they are investigating threats against Colorado Supreme Court justices and are providing extra security around their homes in Denver following the decision to remove former President Donald Trump from the state's presidential election ballot.
The Denver Police Department declined to provide details about the investigation after a request from The Associated Press, citing security and privacy concerns but the fact that the investigation is ongoing.
The department is "currently investigating incidents (threats) against Colorado Supreme Court justices and will continue to work with local, state and federal law enforcement partners to thoroughly investigate any reports of threats or harassment."
Law enforcement went to a judge's home Thursday night after reports of a possible incident, but later confirmed the reports were hoaxes. This case is also being investigated, the police said.
The FBI said it is working with local law enforcement on the matter.
"We will vigorously pursue investigations into any threat or violence by someone who uses extremist views to justify their actions, regardless of motive," a spokeswoman for the FBI's Denver office said in a statement.
In a 4-3 decision last week, Colorado's highest court overturned a district judge's ruling that, while saying Mr. Trump's role in the Jan. 6, 2021 riots at the Capitol was that of an instigator, he refused to exclude him from the ballot for the presidential elections.
The judge said it was unclear whether the insurrection clause in the US Constitution also applies to the presidency.
The Supreme Court disagreed with that assessment, upholding the position of attorneys for six Republican and independent voters in Colorado, who argued that it was absurd to imagine that the framers of that constitutional amendment feared the return of pro-Confederate politicians. in power, would bar them from low-level offices, but not from the highest office in the country.
The court postponed the implementation of its decision until January 4, or until the US Supreme Court in Washington rules on the case. Colorado officials say the issue must be resolved by January 5, the deadline for the state to print its ballots for the presidential election./ VOA
