France/Eiffel Tower staff go on strike

The Eiffel Tower usually sees around 20,000 visitors a day at this time of year.

The Eiffel Tower was closed to the public until further notice after a breakdown in labor contract negotiations, writes DW.

The strike was called ahead of contract negotiations with the city of Paris, which owns the 134-year-old monument, an Eiffel Tower spokesman said.

Union representatives did not immediately return calls for comment, and it was unclear how long the strike would last.

One of the most visited sites in the world, the Eiffel Tower is usually open 365 days a year and is expected to play a central role in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The attraction typically sees about 20,000 visitors a day this time of year, said the monument's spokesman, who was not named publicly in accordance with tower management policy./ CNA
