French police have arrested a 33-year-old man suspected of murdering his wife and four children. 

The children ranged in age from nine months to 10 years.

The investigation was launched after French authorities found the five bodies in a flat in Meaux, 40 km (25 miles) north-east of Paris.

Prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier described the scene as "extreme violence", as when police arrived at the flat they were confronted with carnage. 

Bladier stated that the mother and her two older daughters, aged 10 and 7, had suffered "a large number of stab wounds".

The two youngest, a four-year-old boy and a nine-month-old baby, had no visible wounds on their bodies and most likely drowned. 

Neighbors told local media that the woman had talked about her husband's depression after losing his job. 

Bladier said that, during the search of the apartment, documents were found that could suggest hospitalization in a psychiatric hospital in 2017 and a prescription for sedatives for the perpetrator of the event./ CNA
