Serbia allows the circulation of RKS license plates in its territory

The Government of Serbia made a decision from 01.01.2024 to allow the circulation of license plates of the Republic of Kosovo (RKS) also in its territory.

Until now, citizens of Kosovo had to cover the symbols of the state of Kosovo with adhesive paper, when they were traveling in the territory of Serbia.

The news about the acceptance of Kosovo license plates was announced by the Director of the Office for Kosovo in the Government of Serbia, Petar Petkovic, who said that "Serbia is respecting the agreement reached in 2011 in Brussels on free movement and facilitating the movement of cars for the Serbs of Kosovo".

Petkovic: Practical decision, not recognition of Kosovo

"Allowing all vehicles registered by the Temporary Institutions of Self-Government in Pristina to participate in traffic on the road is done exclusively for practical reasons, in order to ease the situation of individuals and enable their freedom of movement," he said. Petar Petkovic, insisting that this cannot be understood as recognition of Kosovo's independence.

"It is an important and significant decision that clearly shows that there is no recognition of Kosovo and that there is no membership of Kosovo in the United Nations Organization as well as in other UN organizations and agencies," said Petkovic, reminding Pristina official as he said "Let's negotiate and discuss in terms of compromise, but in no way recognition or membership of Kosovo in the UN".

New license plates

In August of last year, Kosovo and Serbia, within the framework of the dialogue, reached an agreement on the use of identification documents and car license plates. For Kosovo Serbs who had illegal car plates, the government gave them until December 15 of this year to convert their plates to RKS.

According to data from the Ministry of Interior of Kosovo, about 4,200 Serb cars have new license plates, while many others have registered their cars in Serbia and they are of course allowed to use them in Kosovo as well. like the license plates of any other country./ DW
