Azerbaijan expels French diplomats amid tensions in Armenia

Azerbaijan has been critical of France regarding its positions in the talks with Armenia following Baku's takeover of the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Azerbaijan's foreign ministry said on Tuesday that two French diplomats had been ordered to leave the country for actions "incompatible with their diplomatic status". 

The ministry said in a statement that it had summoned French ambassador Anne Boillon to express a "strong protest at the actions of two French embassy employees". 

She said the couple were given 48 hours to leave the country. 

But the statement did not give the exact reason for sending the two diplomats home.

The move comes amid strained ties between Baku and Paris as European powers try to mediate between Azerbaijan and neighboring Armenia. 

Azerbaijan retook the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, over which the rivals have fought two wars in recent decades, in a lightning offensive in September against Armenian separatists who had controlled it since the fall of the Soviet Union./ CNA
