India has turned off its lunar rover - the first ever to reach the lunar south pole - after completing its two-week mission conducting experiments, the Indian Space Agency (ISRO) said.

The Pragyan spacecraft, launched on the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, has been put to sleep but its batteries continue to charge, ISRO said in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

"We hope for a successful awakening for the performance of tasks in the future. Otherwise, it will have to stay there forever as India's ambassador to the moon ," ISRO said.

By landing on the moon, India has joined the United States and the former Soviet Union as the only countries to have reached the moon.

However, in recent days, India has gone even further, landing at the South Pole, days after Russia failed in a similar attempt.

ISRO has said that India's Pragyan probe has traveled over 100 meters, confirming the presence of sulphur, iron, oxygen and other elements on the moon.

Now India is hoping for another successful mission, as it launched another device towards the Sun on Saturday.

"The satellite is healthy" and is in Earth orbit, ISRO said on Sunday, as the device prepares for a journey of 1.5 million kilometers./ REL
