Australia launches mission to rescue Antarctic researcher

Australia has launched an emergency operation to rescue a researcher with an "emerging medical condition" from Casey's remote Antarctic outpost.

The icebreaker RSV Nuyina left Tasmania last week, the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP) said.

The AAP said the researcher, an Australian, needs specialist treatment, but did not specify the condition.

The program added that it took weeks to prepare Nuyina for the mission, including equipping it with helicopters.

The Casey Research Station is a 3,443 km journey from Hobart to Tasmania and one of three permanent Antarctic stations operated by the AAP.

Medical facilities are limited at the research station and only about 20 people live there during the winter when conditions are at their worst.

An AAP spokesman told the BBC that "the welfare of our people is our highest priority".

Australia requires all researchers sent to Antarctica to undergo lengthy medical examinations before being deployed.

Evacuations from one of the most inhospitable areas on the planet are often complex, expensive, fraught with danger and may require assistance from international partners.

In December 2020, Australia needed help from the US and China to evacuate an expedition.

Earlier in the same year, an Australian Airbus A319 was sent to McMurdo Station to evacuate a sick American./ CNA
