Syrians protest against Assad

Hundreds of people gathered in southern Syria on September 1 demanding the removal of President Bashar al-Assad from power.

Protests erupted two weeks ago over poor living conditions, but have now turned into renewed calls for political change.

"Leave Bashar, freedom for Syria," chanted protesters in the southern town of Druznem in Sueida. "Syria is not a farm, we are not sheep," read one of the banners.

Syria is in deep economic crisis, as the value of the national currency has fallen to a level last month, being exchanged for 47 pounds to one US dollar. This exchange rate is the lowest since the conflict in Syria began 12 years ago.

Protests erupted in Sueida in August after fuel subsidies were removed. This province, home to the majority of Syria's Druze community, has been under Government control throughout the war and largely free of violence.

Open criticism of the Government in the areas under its control is rare, but the economic situation has worsened, causing public dissatisfaction.

Friday's protest was large, despite division within the Druze leadership over the demonstrations. Some sheikhs of this community have criticized the protesters who demanded Assad's resignation, arguing that any improvement in the socio-economic situation must be done through dialogue.

Also, there was a protest on September 1 in Dara, where the protests had started in 2011, which then led to a civil war. Demonstrations were also held in several other provinces of Syria./ REL
