Biggs is sentenced to 17 years for the attack on the US Capitol

A former leader of the far-right extremist group Proud Boys was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Thursday for leading an attack on the US Capitol.

Joseph Biggs' sentence is among the longest in Capitol riot cases to date, DW reports.

He was convicted in May of several charges, including conspiracy to commit sedition, for helping to lead dozens of Proud Sons members and associates to attack the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes, also convicted of seditious conspiracy, was previously jailed for 18 years.

During the sentencing, District Judge Timothy Kelly said the attack disrupted a crucial moment in American democracy, the certification of the Electoral College vote.

Biggs expressed remorse for his actions.

"I was lured by the crowd, and I just walked on. My curiosity got the better of me," Biggs said.

According to Judge Kelly, there is no evidence that Biggs intended to kill anyone in the riot./ CNA
