The Open Society Foundation has informed organizations in Hungary that depend on its support that the latest decision of the foundation's board ends almost all activities in the European Union, the Hungarian Radio Free Europe Service has learned.

In an email sent to local groups, the Foundation said its resources for Europe would be "extremely limited".

The Foundation, formerly known as the Open Society Institute (OSF), has spent hundreds of millions of dollars since it was founded by Hungarian-born entrepreneur George Soros to strengthen civil societies around the world, from the fall of communism in 1989.

Many non-governmental organizations in Hungary have confirmed to Radio Free Europe that they have accepted this letter, which justifies the board's decision "as a strategic change" to achieve maximum influence in other parts of the world.

With such a change, many European programs could be closed in 2024.

A spokesperson for the Foundation has confirmed to Radio Free Europe the strategic reorganisation, saying the group will continue to "fund civil society groups across Europe", including those working on or supporting EU external affairs. the Roma community.

"We will continue to be a funder of human rights, democracy and government accountability in the region, especially in Ukraine, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan and the Western Balkans, through the work of our national foundations," the statement said.

In response, it has been said that the specific organization of the grants will be decided in the coming months.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and many members of his Fidesz party have been critical of Soros' role in the region.

The Open Society Foundation closed its Budapest offices in 2018 and moved to Berlin, citing "the extremely oppressive political and legal environment in Hungary".

George Soros, 93, appointed his son Alexander Soros to head the Foundation earlier this year and announced major changes to the foundation's structure./ REL
