National security advisers from around the world gathered in Davos on Sunday as Ukraine struggles to find a peace formula to end Russia's nearly two-year aggression.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who is scheduled to speak at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos later in the week, was not at the early morning opening session attended by 81 officials from various countries and international organizations.

Mr Zelenskiy was represented at Sunday's talks by his chief of staff Andriy Yermak, which was also attended by the US Special Representative for Ukraine's Economic Recovery, Penny Pritzker, and James O'Brien, the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian.

As concerns grow about continued US support for the war in Ukraine during an election year, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken are expected to address the proceedings of the World Economic Forum, which officially opens on Monday evening. .

The host country, Switzerland, said the Ukraine peace talks aimed to finalize principles "for a lasting and just peace in Ukraine" at the level of national security advisers.

The principles, she said in a statement last week, should form the basis for future stages of the peace process.

Attention in Davos has focused on the role of developing countries in the talks on the peace formula in Ukraine.

Many of the non-aligned countries from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia, which have largely stayed on the sidelines over the Ukraine issue, will meet this week in the Swiss mountain resort.

Strongly supported by its allies, Ukraine has repeatedly said that it will not surrender until it frees every part of the territory taken from Russia./ VOA
