Military base in Cyprus attacked by drone/Great Britain evacuates families

Families living at a British military base on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus are being evacuated after a single-tracked attack drone struck the site late Sunday, causing minimal damage.

The UK Ministry of Defence said the relocation of dependents was a precautionary measure, adding that the Royal Air Force airbase at Akrotiri remains fully operational, protecting Britain's security and interests. 

This comes after the UK strengthened its military bases in Cyprus with reinforced defensive measures, including radars, counter-drone systems, F-35 fighter jets and ground-based air defences, to support the security and stability of the Middle East.

Any confirmed attack on a British military installation could become particularly significant because under NATO's Article 5, an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. However, the country would have to use Article 5 to convince other NATO countries to join the fray. /CNA
