Suddenly, warnings about cannabis are popping up everywhere.
In early February, researchers reported that serious mental illnesses have increased significantly among young people in Canada, paralleling access to high-strength cannabis.
The other day, the book "A Murder for Cannabis" was published, about a murder in California in 2019 — and about the violence that follows the cannabis business, violence that legalization has not solved.
On February 9, the New York Times withdrew its support for full legalization of cannabis. Writing that the United States has “a marijuana problem,” the newspaper acknowledged that cannabis addiction and psychosis have become a crisis. It called for a ban on THC extracts, a step that would decriminalize a portion of the legal industry. (THC is the chemical in the plant that makes users feel high, and vapes that deliver near-pure doses of THC are now popular with users — and a major source of revenue for the industry.)
I don't want to say "you knew it would happen".
In 2019, I wrote the book “Tell Your Children,” carefully documenting decades of studies linking cannabis and THC to mental illness, particularly psychosis and schizophrenia.
The uncontrolled legalization of cannabis endangered the mental health of teens and young adults, I wrote. And cannabis advocates and companies had spent a generation arguing that the drug was medicine, not a recreational substance. That marketing ploy encouraged its use in the most dangerous way, for conditions like anxiety and depression by people who were already at high risk for mental illness.
When the book “Tell Your Children” came out in 2019, the industry tried to discredit it, as I expected.
But I didn't expect the Times and other media outlets, which are supposed to be independent and fact-based, to help them.
The Times refused to review “Tell Your Children,” even though I had been a reporter there for a decade and the book offered new research on an important issue. Media outlets like NPR scheduled and then canceled interviews with me. The Washington Post openly attacked it, calling it a “controversy.”
As I wrote in “Pandemic,” the “Tell Your Kids” firestorm convinced me personally how badly the “woke” camp had become entrenched in traditional media. The Times’ reporters believed — wrongly — that many black Americans were in prison for minor cannabis-related crimes. Therefore, legalizing cannabis was an issue of racial equality. Any debate on that ended there. And anyone who said otherwise was considered racist.
So, I took my shots and waited for the truth to come out.
The wall of the “woke” group in traditional media is still largely intact.
(Do të kthehet).
