Bitcoin's rise continues/ New cryptocurrency record exceeds $120,000

Bitcoin's price hit a record high as the popular cryptocurrency broke the $120,000 barrier in the last few hours. Specifically, Bitcoin rose 2.5% to a high of $122,105, and has already risen more than 10% in the past week alone.

Bitcoin's surge comes as US lawmakers prepare to consider a series of bills in the coming days, aimed at creating clearer regulatory frameworks for digital assets.

The US Congress is essentially preparing for the long-awaited "Cryptocurrency Week", with the aim of making America the "cryptocurrency capital of the world".

Because it remains prone to large price swings, bitcoin’s trajectory tends to follow that of riskier assets like technology stocks, although it has consistently outperformed them in 2025. Year-to-date through Friday, only gold, up 27.7%, has outperformed bitcoin, up 25.9%. By comparison, the tech-focused Nasdaq 100 index has gained 8.7%, while the broader S&P 500 has risen 7%.

As of early Monday morning, the nearly 20 million individual bitcoins in existence had a combined value of $2.4 trillion, making the entire asset class the fifth most valuable in the world, surpassing Amazon and approaching Apple, according to cryptocurrency news site CoinTelegraph.com.
