Hopes for a two-week ceasefire boost stocks, oil falls sharply

International stock markets rose sharply, while oil prices fell sharply, after the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, linked to the safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. According to Reuters, Brent fell 13.3% to $94.76 a barrel, while US WTI oil lost 15.2%, falling to $95.79.

President Donald Trump said he has agreed to suspend bombing of Iran for two weeks, following a proposed ceasefire brokered by Pakistan. Trump linked the move to the immediate and full opening of the Strait of Hormuz, while calling a 10-point proposal from Iran a possible basis for further negotiations.

The market reaction was immediate. Investors read the deal as a signal of a temporary stabilization of energy exports, sending stocks higher, oil prices down and investors’ risk appetite soaring. However, analysts warned that optimism remains fragile, as infrastructure damage and geopolitical uncertainties have not disappeared.

Today's developments in Asian stock markets reinforced this climate of relief. According to the AP, Japan's Nikkei index rose 5%, South Korea's Kospi by 5.9%, while the Australian market gained 2.6%, as investors reacted to falling energy prices and the resumption of movement in Hormuz during the ceasefire period.

US stock futures rose about 2.5% as expectations of market volatility eased after a two-week ceasefire. In India, the stock market rose 3.6% as falling oil prices were seen as easing inflationary pressures.

However, Reuters warns that the physical oil market remains under stress, despite the positive reaction of the stock markets. Saudi Arabia has raised the official selling price for May deliveries to record levels, which indicates that supply shortages and high costs have not disappeared. This means that today's drop in oil may be more of a relief reaction than a signal that the crisis is over. / Monitor Magazine
