EBRD/Sejko report: Population aging and youth migration, a threat to the economy

The Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sekjo, was present this Tuesday at the presentation of the EBRD Transition Report, 2025-2026.

 In his speech, Sejko focused on two issues, the aging population and the constant departure of young people.

According to Sejko, these demographic concerns pose a risk to the long-term sustainability of the country's economic growth, as they affect aggregate demand and supply, consumption patterns, Albanian businesses and families.

"Our country reflects many of the trends described in this latest EBRD report; population aging combined with a significant outflow of young people and the working-age population. These dynamics are expected to continue and overturn the demographic pyramid. The population has been in continuous decline while the median age is rapidly increasing. Historically low unemployment levels and labor shortages in key sectors have made the long-term consequences of demographic changes more visible for both businesses and households. Population aging affects both aggregate demand and supply, which changes consumption patterns. It changes productivity, increases production costs and ultimately affects prices, investments and production capacity, posing a threat to the long-term sustainability of economic growth," Sejko emphasized. /CNA
