After the elections in Germany/ How is the result affecting the euro market?

The euro surged to a one-month high on Monday after German conservatives won national elections as expected, with investors awaiting further results to see whether much-needed fiscal reform was possible.

Conservative Friedrich Merz, set to become Germany's next chancellor, is likely to face complex and lengthy coalition negotiations, with investors taking heart that the election yielded no nasty surprises.

Analysts say the focus is now on how quickly they can form a conservative Christian Democrat coalition government to bring much-needed change to a fragile economy.

"More market-friendly coalitions are still possible in theory, including the Grand Coalition and the Kenyan one with the conservative CDU, SPD (Social Democrats) and the Greens," said Frederik Ducrozet, head of macroeconomic research at Pictet Wealth Management.

Britain's FTSE 100 index is expected to open 10 points higher at 8,672, Germany's DAX up 229 points at 22,486, France's CAC up 16 points at 8,165 and Italy's FTSE MIB down 6 points at 38,506, according to the data. /CNA
