High prices in supermarkets/ Balkan consumers towards boycott

Consumers in the Balkans are unhappy with the price situation for basic products. Rising prices in supermarkets in the region are squeezing their budgets for everyday needs.

A series of boycotts of retail products has spread across the Balkan region in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Serbia.

In recent weeks, the countries have witnessed a significant number of supermarket boycotts as citizens express their frustration over escalating prices, a frustration shared by shoppers in other EU member states and some of those seeking to join the bloc.

The problem is twofold; on the one hand, high prices make it difficult for many consumers to afford basic products, on the other hand, local producers say they cannot compete with large chains due to cheaper imports and the prices they are paid that do not cover production costs.

Economists explain the new wave of price increases with the strong growth of personal consumption and total domestic demand and on the other hand with the limited growth on the supply side. A large part of the demand side is generated by the state due to the large inflow of European funds, cohesion funds and funds for the recovery from the pandemic./CNA
