From Germany to the United Kingdom/ Markets that Albanian accountants can work

In many cases, Albanian firms already have real experience with international clients, mainly in areas such as legal compliance, basic accounting, financial reporting and administrative support, showing that the export of services is not a theoretical idea, but a practice that is starting to take shape.

A detailed assessment of 168 professionals and entities in the sector, individual accountants, small and medium-sized accounting and auditing firms, revealed a more positive picture than the common perception of Albania's capacities in the export of accounting services.

The analysis showed that the technical knowledge of Albanian professionals is solid and in line with international standards, including IFRS, ISA and IPSAS, which constitutes an important basis for providing services abroad.

The analysis was conducted within the framework of a specialized professional development and international promotion program, which aims to make Albania a regional provider of accounting services for EU markets, a program supported by the Government of Switzerland through SECO and the technical assistance of the World Bank.

A notable advantage is related to the knowledge of many languages. English and Italian are the strongest languages ??used by Albanian professionals, making the sector particularly suitable for markets such as Italy, the United Kingdom and Germany.

This language ability, combined with competitive costs and organizational flexibility, creates favorable conditions for providing accounting and financial services remotely.

The assessment also showed that interest in internationalization is concrete. A group of 36 entities expressed immediate readiness to export services, while 74 others were assessed as having high potential to enter EU markets after strengthening their technological and organizational capacities.

In many cases, Albanian firms already have real experience with international clients, mainly in areas such as legal compliance, basic accounting, financial reporting and administrative support, showing that the export of services is not a theoretical idea, but a practice that is starting to take shape.

These findings, according to Finance, confirm that the accounting profession in Albania, although fragmented and dominated by small structures, carries several essential competitive advantages: consistent technical quality, cost-effectiveness, operational flexibility, and relative staff stability.

"From my professional experience, it is essential to be able to demonstrate concrete capacity and capabilities, and this should be done first in the domestic market. You need to be able to prove what you do."

Only after this has been consolidated should a targeted approach be pursued, for example by approaching multilateral institutions or multinational corporations that have activity in Albania, where it makes sense for international partners to collaborate with you.

It builds from there. This has been my professional experience: it is possible, and when two or three long-term relationships and programs are established, momentum is created.

"It is often surprising how quickly growth accelerates," says Sean Sweeney, an Irish expert engaged in implementing the project to increase the export capacity of accounting services in Albania.

Key gaps: technology, integration and data security

At the same time, the assessment also clearly highlighted the gaps that need to be addressed for a sustainable entry into European markets.

The main gaps relate to the level of digitalization, the use of cloud platforms, and the ability to seamlessly integrate with foreign client systems. Also, data privacy and security standards, including GDPR compliance and certifications such as ISO 27001, remain a challenge for a significant portion of firms.

Another critical element is the management of capacities and human resources, especially in conditions where demands from international clients require consistency, respect for deadlines, and consistent quality of service.

International marketing and building credibility in new markets are also areas where Albanian firms need support and strategic guidance.

To address these gaps, the project undertook a series of specialized trainings, which included process automation, financial analytics, the use of technological tools, as well as the development of soft skills, such as communication with international clients, project management, and professional negotiations.

The goal was not only technical improvement, but also preparing firms to operate according to the standards and expectations of EU markets.

International marketing and positioning: a structured approach to EU markets

Based on market analysis and existing capacities, several priority markets for the export of Albanian accounting services were identified.

Italy is seen as the most natural market due to geographical proximity, linguistic ties and high demand for support services.

The United Kingdom represents a mature market for outsourcing and specialized services, while Germany offers concrete opportunities due to labor shortages and the need for back-office services. France is also showing increasing demand for standardized and cost-effective services.

The marketing plan envisages a gradual and realistic approach: strengthening capacities within the country, building partnership networks in the EU, targeted participation in international activities and events, and creating a unified professional identity for Albanian accounting services.

This approach aims to position Albania not as a random provider, but as a reliable and competitive partner in European professional services markets. /Monitor
