American buyers of Swiss products, from luxury watches and skin care products to artisanal chocolates, could soon face significant price hikes if negotiators fail to reach a deal to avoid the 39% tariffs that are set to take effect.

Coffee

Consumer goods giant Nestlé is one of Switzerland's largest firms. The company says it faces minimal direct impact from the tariffs because it produces more than 90% of what it sells in the U.S. locally.

This is generally the case for basic consumer products, such as instant coffee or bottled water, which are high-volume, low-price items.

Roger Wehrli, director of the Swiss chocolate industry association Chocosuisse, said a 39% tariff rate would be passed on through prices and would cause a huge loss of US business for many of the group's members. The recent appreciation of the Swiss franc against the US dollar, which makes imports more expensive, means the effective price increase would be closer to 55%.

Skin care

Swiss beauty and skin care products, known worldwide, could also be subject to price increases, as brands not included in an exemption from pharmaceutical tariffs aim to offset higher import costs.

This may be most evident for companies that pride themselves on Swiss manufacturing, such as caviar-based anti-aging skincare brand La Prairie, spa supplier Valmont, and nail care business Mavala.

Higher import duties are also seen driving up the price of luxury goods, including high-end jewelry brands owned by Richemont, Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. /CNA
