Eurostat: EU increased imports for medicinal and pharmaceutical products by 21%

In 2025, the EU exported medicinal and pharmaceutical products worth €366.2 billion and imported €145.7 billion, resulting in a record trade surplus of €220.5 billion, according to Eurostat.

According to statistics published by the EU statistics office, compared to 2024, exports increased by 16.0% to 315.7 billion euros and imports increased by 21.0% to 120.4 billion euros.

In 2025, Ireland was the largest EU exporter of medicinal and pharmaceutical products to countries outside the EU, with exports worth €93.8 billion, followed by Germany with €67.9 billion and Belgium with €38.5 billion.

The largest importers from countries outside the EU were Italy with 27.5 billion euros, Belgium with 24.7 billion euros and Germany with 24.2 billion euros.

The United States was the leading destination for extra-EU exports of medicinal and pharmaceutical products in 2025, accounting for 43.8% of all exports, worth €160.6 billion. Switzerland was the second largest partner with 16.3% for €59.7 billion, followed by the United Kingdom with 5.6% for €20.6 billion.

Most imports into the European Union came from the United States with 41.2% for 60.1 billion euros, Switzerland with 28.4% for 41.4 billion euros and China with 9.0% for 13.1 billion euros. /CNA
