The year 2025 has turned out to be an unfavorable year in terms of hydropower. Total energy production in the country has decreased compared to 2024, which has caused imports to increase by 65 percent in the third quarter compared to the previous year.
Production from hydroelectric power plants has been lower, and consequently the weight that photovoltaics have had in total energy has increased significantly. The introduction into production of a series of plants with considerable capacity has meant that in the third quarter, solar energy, which is actually categorized as "other", accounts for almost 1/3 of the total energy balance.
"During the third quarter of 2025, available electricity decreased by 1.1%. Net domestic electricity production in this period decreased by 31.3%, reaching 1,075 GWh from 1,565 GWh of energy produced in the third quarter of 2024. This production was realized by public hydropower plants at a rate of 54.5%, by private and concessionary hydropower plants at a rate of 16.5% and by other producers at a rate of 29.0% of the net domestic electricity production.
"Gross import of electricity (energy in receipt), in the third quarter of 2025, reached 1,260 GWh, from 762 GWh in the same period a year earlier, marking an increase of 65.3%. Gross export of electricity (energy in delivery) reached 312 GWh, from 282 GWh, marking an increase of 10.8%," the energy balance for the third quarter of this year states.
According to INSTAT, public hydropower plants, in the third quarter of 2025, produced 586 GWh from 1,088 GWh produced in the third quarter of 2024, thus marking a decrease in production by 46.1%. Private and concessionary hydropower plants, produced 178 GWh from 292 GWh produced in the same period a year earlier, marking a decrease in electricity production by 39.0%.
Other producers produced 311 GWh from 185 GWh produced in the same period a year earlier, marking an increase in electricity production of 68.4%. The electricity exchange (the difference between gross energy exports and imports), in the third quarter of 2025, reached a negative value of 948 GWh.
INSTAT reported that network losses reached 323 GWh in the third quarter of 2025 from 344 GWh in the third quarter of 2024, marking a decrease of 5.9%. The share of network losses in the total available electricity during the third quarter of 2025 is 16.0% from 16.8% in the third quarter of 2024.
"Electricity use by consumers, in the third quarter of 2025, decreased by 0.1%, reaching 1,700 GWh from 1,702 GWh in the third quarter of 2024. The decrease in electricity use by consumers was mainly influenced by non-household consumers, who recorded a decrease in consumption by 0.3%, while household consumers recorded a slight increase of 0.1%, compared to the third quarter of 2024," the publication states./ Monitor.al
