Balance, tourism and heat wave increased energy use by 4.7%

The use of energy in the country increased in the third quarter by 4.7 percent.

The energy balance published by INSTAT for July-September shows that there was an increase in both households and businesses. This tendency was expected in the conditions of a summer with extremely high temperatures but also for the large tourist flow of the country where the businesses of the sector and those of the supporting industries and beyond worked at full capacity.

"The use of electricity by consumers, in the third quarter of 2023, increased by 4.7%, reaching the value of 1,586 GWh from 1,514 GWh that was in the third quarter of 2022. In the increase in the use of electricity from consumers have influenced family consumers, where we have an increase in electricity consumption by 5.2%, while the energy consumed by non-family consumers has increased by 4.3%", says the INSTAT publication.

The same reported that during the third quarter of 2023, available electricity increased by 3.9%. This positive performance is related to the fact of a favorable water year as this year has turned out.

"The net domestic production of electricity in this period increased by 17.5%, reaching the value of 1,611 GWh from 1,371 GWh of energy produced in the third quarter of 2022. This production was realized by public hydropower plants to the extent of 76.7% , from private and concessionary hydropower plants to the extent of 21.5% and from other producers (Photovoltaics) to the extent of 1.8% of the net domestic production of electricity", underlines INSTAT.

Thanks to a more favorable water situation, imports have been lower than a year ago, while exports have also been lower due to the fact that, unlike in 2022, public companies were more careful with the management of the water reserve.

"The gross import of electricity (energy in receipt), in the third quarter of 2023, reached the value of 755 GWh from 1,142 GWh that was in the same period of the previous year, thus marking a decrease of 33.9%. The gross export of electricity (energy in delivery) reached the value of 453 GWh from 670 GWh, marking a decrease of 32.5%.

Public hydropower plants, in the third quarter of 2023, produced 1,236 GWh from 1,026 GWh produced in the third quarter of 2022, thus marking an increase in production by 20.4%.

Private and concessionary hydropower plants produced 346 GWh from 324 GWh produced in the same period a year ago, marking an increase in electricity production by 6.6%. Electricity exchange (difference between export and gross import of energy), in the third quarter of 2023 is -302 GWh, from -472 GWh that was in the third quarter of 2022", INSTAT estimates.

The data show an increase in losses in the distribution system, mainly related to technical ones and resulting from the amortized network. We remind you that public companies have suspended investments due to the supply emergency, which is expected to last until the end of this year.
