EU opens bank in Albania/ Favors projects such as transport, energy and water

The European Investment Bank, a body of the European Union and one of the largest investors and creditors globally, will open a branch in Albania.

"The EIB's decision to open a branch in Albania is in full harmony with the EU's policies towards the Western Balkans. A similar decision has been taken for Bosnia, Serbia and Macedonia.

It is a decision that comes as a result of the EU's growth plan, which approved a value of around 6 billion euros last year to support the process of harmonization and EU accession of the Western Balkans. The EIB will serve as the banking arm of the disbursement of these funds and as an eye to control the feasibility of the major projects to be financed.

"The EU's goal with these funds is not to boost local economies, but to promote the interconnection and cooperation of regional economies," said Artan Gjergji, banking market expert.

The European Investment Bank provides loans at favorable rates for projects that meet its criteria, with a focus on the transport, water supply and energy sectors.

According to experts in the field, starting from the government's initiative to open the Albanian Development Bank, it shows that the market in Albania has new potential to exploit.

In the case of the Albanian Development Bank, experts suggest that over the first few years, the government, which will own 51% of the shares, should exit the scheme and transfer the capital share to market actors, to avoid allusions to influence beyond doing business. /CNA
